Pintos Competed for World Titles

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

TULSA- Colorful Pinto horses, ponies and miniatures vied to be champions at the 2011 Pinto World Championship on June 7-18. Traveling from across the United States and Canada, exhibitors and their Pintos shared success as they earned a multitude of prizes, awards and friendships.

Tulsa’s Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at Expo Square provided the venue for tough competition for over 2,000 exhibitors and more than 7,400 judged class entries. Produced by the Pinto Horse Association of America Inc., the Pinto World Championship showcased many disciplines including jumping, reining, driving, roping, pleasure and halter.

Belt buckles by Gist Silversmiths and rosette ribbons were just the beginning of the approximate $225,000 in prizes awarded during the 12-day show. High point awards varied from Dale Chavez custom trophy saddles and Kensington protective products to jackets from Tioga Territory.

This was the second year of the Zone Invitational competition. The winner of each age division received a trophy saddle, reserve receiving a show headstall and third place received a show halter. All three awards were custom made by Dale Chavez Company.

“We couldn’t put this show on without our generous sponsors,” said Darrell Bilke, PtHA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “We were able to give great prizes this year to many of our participating Pintos at the show.”

Philanthropy is always at the heart of the Pinto family. This year the PWC included several events that support their affections for charity work, including the Charity Walk/Trot class and the Pink Your Pinto Parade. The Parade was nothing short of an emotional night that paid tribute to those who have battled cancer. Cowboy boots were decorated and painted pink by PtHA members and used to collect donations as the parade participants told their stories of survival and loss. The evening earned $2,956.00 for the Peggy and Charles Stephenson Oklahoma Cancer Center and Rein in Cancer.

The Pinto Heritage Foundation had several fundraisers this year in an effort to raise money for the youth scholarship program. A framed, signed and numbered Orren Mixer “Dreams Come True” artist proof and $500 PtHA credit were raffled off and a station laminating back numbers for exhibitors was set up. The Pinto Heritage Foundation continued with their second year of the Celebrity Walk/ Trot class. Together all of the Foundation’s events gained a total of $3,874.00.

Light-hearted and comical, the costume class provided the opportunity to see the silly side of serious horse show competitors. The class featured a dozen Pintos of all sizes and their handlers dressed in costume.  The world champion was Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the reserve champion was a carousel horse and rider.

“It is nice to see competitors having a good time together at the show,” said Bilke. “We try to keep a light-hearted, family atmosphere so people can get the most out of their experience.”

Challenged Rider’s Leadline class boasted exhibitors from across the nation. Sponsored by Ford Farms the class gave challenged riders a chance to win a world champion buckle in front of their family and friends. A turnout of 15 proud world champions walked away with this years shiniest buckle from Gist Silversmiths.

Evening competitions kept spectators entertained as Pintos competed for prestigious titles. Among those were the youth/amateur and the open versatility events in honor of influential PtHA supporters, Billie Cousins and Denny Tuttle respectively. After competing in the four events that tested a variety of the Pintos’ skills, Starlotte, shown and owned by Brayanna Bergstrom, won the youth/amateur versatility and Ton of Trouble, shown by Heather Brower and Amanda Ringer and owned by Julia Dejonghe, won the open versatility. Additionally, Charisma Spots Agold, shown and owned by Joni Osborn, won the Miniature Versatility Showcase.

Exhibitor J. Fred Tabor led KidsClassicCenterfold, owned by John Cadenhead, to the Supreme Color Championship.

When the Youth and Amateurs were not in the show ring or getting their horse ready for their next class, they had the opportunity to compete in a horse knowledge test and the team tournament competition.

Proving the Pinto World Championship isn’t all about equine competition, many special family-friendly activities were held during the two weeks in Tulsa. These included the PWC Welcome Party with free food and drinks, the Youth and Amateur Ice Cream Social, the PWC Dog Show and a new event to the show, the Horses for Heroes walk/ trot class. This class allowed active military, veterans and their families to participate in the world show and receive due recognition for their continuous dedication to our country.

Incorporated in 1956, the Pinto Horse Association of America was formed to encourage the promotion of quality horses, ponies and miniatures with color and to establish a registry for maintaining their pedigrees and records. Currently, the association serves approximately 12,000 members and boasts more than 141,000 registered Pintos.

What Is Good Sportsmanship?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Aryn was crying by the time the class ended. It wasn’t because she had lost. It wasn’t because she was unhappy about her own ride. It wasn’t even because of anything the horse had done. Aryn’s tears came after her dad yelled at her — in front of all the other competitors in the class — for missing her diagonal in the equitation pattern. Aryn is just 8 years old.

If your child has ever participated in a sport, you’ve undoubtedly met people like Aryn’s dad, parents who behave inappropriately and upset their kids. These parents get so wrapped up in winning, losing and how well their own child performed that they lose sight of what’s really important. They forget that one of the most important goals of kids’ sports is to promote a sense of good sportsmanship.

What Is Good Sportsmanship?

Good sportsmanship is when riders, opponents, coaches/trainers, and judges treat each other with respect. Kids learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Kids who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike way gradually come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity — whether they win or lose.

Parents can help their kids understand that good sportsmanship includes both small gestures and heroic efforts. It starts with something as simple as shaking hands or saying good luck to the other competitors, and includes acknowledging good efforts made by others and accepting errors gracefully.

Displaying good sportsmanship isn’t always easy: It can be tough to congratulate the winner after losing. But the kids who learn how to do it will benefit in many ways.

A child who practices good sportsmanship is likely to carry the respect and appreciation of other people into every other aspect of life.

Hay Prices Could Be “Significantly Higher” In 2011 Than Last Year

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

May 2, 2011 7:48 PM, by Rick Mooney

While no one is expecting a repeat of the record-high levels of 2008, hay prices may be higher, possibly even significantly higher, in 2011 than they were a year ago, market watchers say.

A tightening supply situation is the key factor. According to USDA’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report, U.S. producers intend to harvest hay on 59 million acres this year, 1% fewer than in 2010.

“That would take overall production down a couple of million tons compared to last year,” says Matt Diersen, ag economist with South Dakota State University Extension. “That would certainly be enough to get hay prices moving upward.”

A major surprise in the March report, says Diersen, is that hay acreage wasn’t down even more given increasing prices of corn, cotton and other crops. He attributes at least part of that to the fact that alfalfa prices nationwide were up nearly 20% in March compared to those of a year earlier.

“The price likely kept some acres in alfalfa production that might have otherwise gone to other crops,” he says.

Prospective Plantings report numbers, gathered in late February and early March, are likely to change once producers get around to putting forage crops in this spring, cautions Curt Lacy, livestock economist with University of Georgia Extension.

Corn prices rose sharply immediately after the report was released, he notes, which could draw more acres away from hay and into corn or other grains.

“People need to keep in mind that the March report is preliminary. Growers could still decide that the higher grain prices are too tempting to pass up. So instead of a 1% reduction in hay acres, we could actually see a 2-3% reduction,” he says.

Higher corn prices will draw more hay acres out of production than were indicated by USDA’s March assessment, believes University of Wisconsin Extension educator Ken Barnett, who tracks Midwestern hay and straw prices for his weekly report.

Before seeing the March numbers, Barnett was expecting alfalfa prices in the Midwest to rise roughly 5% this year. Now he believes a price bump of 5-10% is more likely.

“More ground is going to have to go into corn. The big question is: Where is that ground going to come from? In the Midwest, anyway, it’s unlikely that much of it will come out of wheat. So that leaves alfalfa.”

Hay stocks were also already tight heading into the winter feeding season that just ended. In its January Crop Production report, USDA estimated total U.S. hay stocks as of Dec. 1, 2010, at 102 million tons, down 5% from the year-earlier total.

May hay stocks typically tend to be about 20% of Dec. 1 stocks, South Dakota State’s Diersen points out. If that trend holds, this year’s May 1 stocks would be somewhere around 20.5 million tons, the lowest since 2007. What’s more, if the high usage that led to the low Dec. 1 stocks level continued this winter, he believes May 1 stocks could be as low 18 million tons.

“Anything below that would suggest a serious shortage exists, and potential supply problems would be in place for the 2011 crop,” he points out.

As always, Diersen adds, weather will likely play a major role in determining if there’s a new-crop hay-price rally this spring and just how robust such a rally might be.

“Given the likely tight supply situation, if we have any kind of production delay for the new crop, we could see some wild price fluctuations that would favor those on the selling side,” he says.

NRCHA Derby Rescheduled!

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Competition Set for October 26 in Queen Creek, Arizona

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors has announced that the NRCHA Derby, originally slated for June 14-19 in Paso Robles, California, will be held at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre October 26-30. The NRCHA Derby was postponed as a result of the EHV-1 outbreak.

“The decision to postpone the Derby was difficult. We first elected to offer full refunds to all entries that elected not to attend the event because of the outbreak. The resulting decrease in entries made it unfeasible to continue on with the show,” NRCHA President Kathy Gould explained.

During the June 14 Board Meeting, the NRCHA Board of Directors considered all options for available dates and locations to reschedule the event. It was decided that the best choice would be to move the event to the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre, in Queen Creek, Arizona. The event will begin on Wednesday, October 26, and run through Sunday, October 30.

“The rescheduled Derby needed to be a stand-alone event, so that we could offer all the horse show classes along with the Limited Age Event,” noted Gould. “The NRCHA extends a huge thank you to Nancy Crawford-Hall for continuing her sponsorship of the $50,000 Added Holy Cow Performance Horses Open Bridle Spectacular, which is the showcase event of the NRCHA Derby Horse Show.”

Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre will become a familiar locale for NRCHA members, as the NRCHA Stakes will make the move to the first-class facility in 2012. “This is a great opportunity for people to get to know Queen Creek. We are excited to have it as the home for the Stakes. Now people can get to know the facility and be ready when they come back next March. We look forward to returning to the home of the NRCHA Derby – the Paso Robles Event Centre – in 2012,” Gould said.

Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre General Manager Tim Lynch noted, “We’re excited as can be. We’re a brand new facility and to be able to have a marquee event – the NRCHA Stakes – here is a fantastic opportunity. Hosting the Derby this year gives us an opportunity for people to experience all that we have to offer.”

The Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre is two years old, and boasts four large arenas, an RV park, and 300 stalls. The town of Queen Creek also has a lot to offer. “Arizona has a great atmosphere – it has a lot of western and Mexican influences. The other great thing is the predictable Arizona weather – clear, dry, and warm,” Lynch said.

Compact Adult Tricycle – C.A.T.

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Jill’s Enterprises was established in June of 2001.  After running my successful insurance business in Iowa for 22 years and following a move to Missouri, I began searching for a new business challenge.  It was during this search that I discovered the Compact Adult Tricycle or C.A.T. at the American Quarter Horse Association World Show, I immediately knew I’d found a product that I could really get behind.  This awesome ride is completely ADA compliant with a top speed of 16 miles per hour, a range of 25 miles, and, a zero turning radius only your imagination will limit your adventures.

With a 25 mile range and a speed of 16 M.P.H., only your imagination limits the possible uses for your CAT. My husband and I enjoy going to horse shows and when you go to a big show  you have to park your trailer a mile or more away.  The CAT scooter is awesome to run back and forth from the trailer to the barn. Jim loves the wagon that hooks to the back of the scooter as he can haul a bale of hay, feed or tack in the back.

2011 NRCHA Derby Canceled

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors met June 3 to discuss the NRCHA Derby, scheduled for June 14-19 at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California.

Earlier, the Board had adopted a full-refund policy for entries that opted not to attend due to the concern over the EHV-1 virus. Because of the ensuing substantial reduction in entries, along with the challenge involved in complying with California guidelines as a result of the EHV-1 outbreak, the Board of Directors has elected to cancel the Derby for 2011.

“The NRCHA’s main concern in any situation is the welfare of our equine partners. Canceling our third largest premier event is not a decision that was made lightly,” NRCHA President Kathy Gould explained. “The NRCHA Board is currently reviewing options for rescheduling the event. Those options will be considered during the Board meeting on June 14.”

Another modification that resulted from the EHV-1 outbreak is that the number of shows needed to qualify for the 2011 NRCHA World Championship Show presented by John Deere was reduced from three to two.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, now in its 62nd year, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Adequan, Bob’s Custom Saddles, Cinch, Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, John Deere, Markel Insurance Company, Nutrena, Pfizer Animal Health, Platinum Performance, Quarter Horse News, Rios of Mercedes, Running W Designs, Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc, parent company of San Juan Ranch,  the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino, and Merial products UlcerGard and EQUIOXX, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
