The Morgan is easily recognized by his proud carriage, upright graceful neck, and distinctive head with expressive eyes. Deep bodied and compact, the Morgan has strongly muscled quarters. The intelligence, willingness, zest for life, and good sense of the Morgan is blended with soundness of limb, athleticism, and stamina. In addition, Morgan thriftiness and longevity have made this breed a good bargain for more than 200 years – easy to love and affordable to own. The Morgan horse is free moving and calm under western tack or elegant and aristocratic ridden in English style. A tractable temperament allows the Morgan to excel when driving in single or multiple hitches. Companionable and comfortable on a quiet pleasure ride anywhere open skies beckon, working as a sensible partner in a long day of ranch work or endurance riding, waiting alert and ready to enter a show ring, or performing in formal riding disciplines, the Morgan is a versatile horse within a versatile breed. The Morgan horse agreeably adapts to his owner’s life style. This first American breed can be found worldwide.Reliable, loyal, tireless, and versatile, a Morgan becomes one with people of all ages and walks of life, sharing the mutual enjoyment in every equine pastime.

Origin of the Morgan Horse

178statue_front.jpg Justin Morgan was a teacher, composer, businessman, and horseman who had moved to Randolph, Vermont from Springfield, Massachusetts in 1788. He acquired a bay colt, born in 1789, giving him the name Figure. This colt was the founding sire of the Morgan breed. While his true origins remain hidden in history, Figure is thought to have been sired by True Briton, a horse widely respected for his excellence and known as a sire of quality horses. Figure’s dam, was “…of the Wild-air breed, of middling size, with a heavy chest, of a light bay color, with a bushy mane and tail – the hair on the legs rather long, and a smooth, handsome traveler.” Her sire was Diamond; a son of Church’s Wildair by Wildair (Delancey’s) out of a mare owned by Samuel Burt named Wildair. As Figure grew, his compact muscular body and stylish way of moving impressed many of the pioneer farmers and settlers. Soon tales of his beauty, strength, speed, hardiness, endurance, and gentle disposition spread amidst the small New England towns. His ability to outwalk, outtrot, outrun, and outpull other horses were legendary. His stud services were offered throughout the Connecticut River Valley and various Vermont locations over his lifetime. His most valuable asset, however, was the ability to pass on his distinguishing characteristics, not only to his offspring but also through several generations.

After Justin Morgan’s death, Figure moved on to other owners and spent a life working on farms, hauling freight, and as a parade mount at militia trainings. In the practice of the day, he became known by his former owner’s name, the Justin Morgan horse. He spent his life working and died in 1821 from an untreated kick received from another horse. His three most famous sons – Sherman, Bulrush, and Woodbury – would carry on his legacy to future generations of Morgan horses.

Bronze Medal for Team USA's Suzy Stafford, Fourth Place for Team USA at the FEI World Pony Driving Championships

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

From the American Morgan Horse Association

By Cindy Timmer, USEF

Suzy Stafford has won the Individual Bronze medal in the Single Pony class at the FEI World Combined Pony Driving Championships in Greven-Bockholt, Germany, with the Morgan mare Courage To Lead (Courage Of Equinox x Hartland Sable). Team USA finished fourth in the nations competition, which was won by host nation Germany.

Stafford was in second position after the Dressage and the marathon, but the very difficult cones course kept her from keeping the Silver medal. Stafford passed the finish line just a fraction too late to make the time allowed, but knocked two balls down which dropped her to the fourth place at first. But Dutch driver Arjo van Kekem who was leading the standings, left the arena with no more than 12 penalty points, which brought the American back onto the podium. Dutch individual competitor Melanie Becker won the Gold at her first World Championship ever; the Silver medal went to Germany’s Franz-Josef Lehmkuhl. Stafford was a little disappointed with her Bronze medal.

“I was selected to compete at the 2005 World Championships with Courage To Lead, but she was injured at the time, and I used a different pony,” she said. “I won the Gold medal, which was fantastic, and I had hoped to win the Gold medal again this year with Courage. She is very consistent in all three phases of the combined competition and lovely to drive.”

Beverly Lesher of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Courage’s owner, and Suzy’s groom in Dressage and cones, might start breeding with the 14-year-old Morgan mare, so Stafford is exploring her possibilities for the future. “I would love to keep competing with Courage, but if that is no longer possible, I will consider moving on to driving a pair of small horses,” she said. “But nothing is certain yet, I like to keep all my options open”

After Saturday’s elimination in the marathon, team member Sara Schmitt finished 30th in the obstacle driving competition. Individual driver Sherri Dolan pulled out before the cones because her pony had a minor injury after the marathon.

“I am very pleased with the results of Suzy Stafford and Tracey Morgan,” said chef d’equipe Chester Weber. “We will go home and get some work done to be able to be back in the Top Ten again in two years. Our focus will be mainly on marathon and cones. We have a few young pony drivers who are coming along so we will hopefully be able to create new talent and have an even wider choice for the future.”

1st Time Buyers Guide

Monday, August 17th, 2009

There are several factors to consider when buying a horse, today we are going to focus on the first time buyer and purchasing a horse you can be happy with for many years.

Buy a trained horse or one that has been finished in a particular discipline.  A finished horse is a horse that has been trained in every aspect of his discipline. These horses do not require “tune ups” or repeated training sessions with a trainer.

There is an old rule of thumb that says, “Somebody has to know something.” Finished horses not only have experience but know each and every voice command and leg aid.  These horses will respond to the rider’s aid whether they are correct or not.  As the rider gains experience the horse will become more selective, teaching the rider to be more correct with the aids each time they are applied.  This allows you to learn and grow as a rider. I often hear stories of first time buyers who bought a young horse, with the end result of the horse being sold as un-trainable or difficult because the rider got hurt. Young horses are like kids they need discipline, education, and time. Buy a horse that has already been given an education, a horse you can enjoy at all times.

The Black Stallion

The beloved children’s classic The Black Stallion written by Walter Farley has long captured the hearts and minds of readers across the world. No matter how old the story, children fall in love the adventures of the Black and Alec. Today a new group of fans is reading and loving these characters. A project called the Black Stallion Literacy Project takes the book to 1st and 4th grade students across the country on a reading adventure they will never forget, with a live performance by Arabian Nights and the Black Stallion at the end of the unit! Students involved with this project love it, even those who complain about reading a “horse story” fall in love with the book. One of the great things about this project is that each child gets their very own hardback copy of the book to keep. To learn more about this great project and how you can get involved and/or bring this project to a school near you visit Black Stallion Literacy Project.
